For 2019 we have arranged a special tour to the far north of Scotland and beyond.
The tour is over seven days with two stop-overs on mainland Scotland and a four day stay in Kirkwall, the main town on Orkney. We will travel to the islands from Gills Bay which is four miles from John O Groats. The ferry crossing on Pentland Ferries takes approximately one hour. Total mileage for the tour is about 1400 miles.
Orkney is a fascinating place with many pre-historic sights far older than Stonehenge. Scapa Flow, which Orkney surrounds, was the home of the Royal Navy during both World Wars and in 1919 the German Navy fleet scuttled itself in the Flow. Some of them are still visible at low tide. The islands are joined by the Churchill Barriers designed to protect Scapa Flow from German submarines. They were not totally successful as can be discovered if you visit the Naval museum at Lyness on the island of Hoy. Hoy is also the home of the Old Man of Hoy often seen on TV.
The journey there will be via Blairgowerie just north of Perth and John O Groats. We have arranged dinner, bed and breakfast in hotels at both and will return to Blairgowerie on our return journey. In Orkney we will be based at the Ayre Hotel, which is situated on the harbour front overlooking Kirkwall Bay which is frequently visited by large cruise ships. Due to the large number of restaurants in the town, including some of the best fish and chips anywhere, we have only arranged bed and breakfast at the Ayre hotel.
