For 2016 we have arranged a special tour to the far north of Scotland and beyond.
Our destination is the islands of Orkney which are situated 20 miles north of John O Groats.
The main islands are approx. 40 miles long and surround the famous Scapa Flo. For both World Wars is was the Royal Navy's main anchorage and is also the place of the German Navy fleet scuttled itself in 1919. Some are still visible at low tide. The islands are joined by the Churchill Barriers designed to protect Scapa Flo from submarines. There are 4 of them all which we will ride over to get to our hotel in Kirkwall, the capital of Orkney. We will be staying in the Ayre Hotel which is situated on the harbour front overlooking Kirkwall Bay which is frequently visited by large cruise ships. Six are scheduled to be in the bay during our visit.
During our stay you will be able to visit Scara Brea, a pre-historic village uncovered by a storm in 1850, Lyness a Navel museum on the island of Hoy and enjoy some of the best fish and chips to be found anywhere. The ferry trip to Hoy goes via the North Sea Oil terminal on yet another island called Flotta. Or you can enjoy the many miles of well-maintained roads that cris-cross the islands.
Orkney is approx 550 miles from Long Eaton and we will do the journey over 2 days staging in Scotland both ways.
